Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr. Hussain Riaz

As human beings, we are an extremely resilient species. Difficult life experiences, however, do leave traces on our minds and emotions, on our capacity for joy and intimacy, and even on our biology and immune systems. Mental illness is, perhaps, our body’s way of convincing us to seek help. Our responsibility as clinicians is, therefore, immense…

As an adult psychiatrist and a mental health advocate, I strongly believe in the adage, ‘there is no health without mental health.’ It is a lesson I have learnt through my own personal journey, and in having lived through challenges and experiences that life has offered.

The opportunity to feel understood and empathized with, to be offered a concerned ear, and to create a human connection are all hallmarks of the holistic care that we desire as human beings, when in strife. For me, this
became a passion, a duty, and a calling.

After graduating from medical school, I moved to the UK where I worked and trained at the Leeds and York Partnership NHS Trust; the leading mental health institute in the region. I completed my Core as well as Specialist training in Psychiatry, and I was awarded the ‘Trainee of the Year’ award during this time. To this day, I remain particularly proud of this achievement.

I have worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist with the NHS in both in-patient as well as community settings. Over the course of my 13-year journey in mental health services, I have garnered extensive experience in various fields within Psychiatry, including Psychiatric Intensive Care, Crisis Resolution, Community mental health, Forensic, Perinatal and Addiction services.

Aside from my clinical work, I hold a keen interest in developing Psychiatric services around the world and engaging in out-reach programmes to inform and educate, as well as make mental health care accessible for all. I am fluent in English, Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi.
